Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of months or have been avoiding the news (no judgement, we also love Netflix) then you would have been hearing all about NBN and changes coming to internet. But what exactly does any of this mean? And how does this effect you and your business?
Well, in Layman’s terms NBN is an acronym for, ‘The National Broadband Network’ that currently is being rolled out by the Australian government. As its only in its early stages, its still trying to iron out the kinks but so far from what we have been seeing, this is looking less than ideal for businesses.
The main technologies NBN use are NFAS (Fibre to the building), NBN NCAS (Fibre to the Node – Copper), NBN NHAS (Coaxial Cable or HFC). We are finding that the NCAS (Copper) flavour of NBN is the most unreliable. It is not widely known that NBN is a CONSUMER product. So while it may suit your needs at home for streaming those funny cat videos, it probably won’t work the same for your business. A business grade flavour of NBN is coming and is a lot more expensive.
Businesses are relying on Internet more than ever and yes speed is important, but reliability is just as important. Much like having a luxurious, fast car – its completely useless if it breaks down all the time.
Business owners have realised that they can get productivity gains by having applications in the cloud. The down side to that strategy is when the Internet goes down -everyone in the office comes to a standstill. So the consumer flavour of NBN is good for consumers or for small businesses working from home. It will not work for most businesses that need a fast reliable Internet connection.
